From business
to art and back again - International Artexpo New York
February 26-March 1 |
Robert Cook, a New Orleans-based artist
wears many hats when it comes to managing an art career and a
successful business. As an artist, he is a rare breed--he jumped
from business to fine art, bring with him entrepreneurial know-how.
Cook worked in the oil and gas business in the early 1980s, but
his first love was art, so he purchased several art galleries
located throughout the country as an investment. His affinity
for art eventually got the best of him, so he got out of the oil
and gas business to devote himself full time to his gallery in
Santa Fe, N.M.
Though he enjoyed it, he still felt as though he hadn't found
his perfect fit. So he decided to become a painter."I couldn't
run my business and paint, so I came back to Louisiana to start
painting on a professional basis," he said. "I basically
taught myself how to do it--I started out with some figurative
work and some traditional landscapes. Slowly, it evolved into
the more contemporary pieces." Cook's evolution continued,
and he soon began creating moody paintings featuring his distinctive
trees that have become popular with collectors. "I do like
to paint a mood," he explained.
"I was initially trying to do simplistic work, but I find
that putting the trees in the work gives people something they
can relate to. A tree can represent a person or a place or something
living. It has kind of that living human component." Cook
soon found that his originals were selling out at an amazing pace.
That's when he decided to produce band-embellished giclees, creating
his first limited edition in 1995. In search of a venue to sell
his work, he decided to exhibit though his company, R. Cook Editions,
at Artexpo California in 2001...
