IBM offers Linux Blades on Power 4 cores and Itanium 2 SMPs - News Review - International Business Machines Corp.
IBM made two server announcements last month, putting a dense Blade formation of its own PowerPC chips into a 64-bit High Performance Computing server, the JS20 running Linux now with AIX to come. It has also swapped out the Intel Xeons in its xSeries 450, replacing them with Itanium 2s, in configurations of up to 16 CPUs, aimed at fast transaction servers for Windows and Linux, dubbed the xSeries 455. Both architectures existed previously, but only with Intel Xeon chips at their heart. The BladeCenter JS20 has the PowerPC 970 core and supports both SuSE Linux and Turbolinux. Red Hat Linux and AIX support will follow. |
The PPC 970 is derived from the same Power4 technology currently used in IBM eServer pSeries systems that support Unix and Linux applications. The JS20 is the cheapest IBM Power based server it has put out yet, with a starting price of $2,699 aimed at customers in financial services, research and life sciences. This machine pretty much takes in the low end of IBM's July-launched AHD Opteron multiprocessor, targeted at much the same markets but in far larger processor configurations when it delivered what it called the world's largest supercomputer with it, based on the eServer 325 and using 2,636 processors including 1,058 eServer 325 and running SuSE Linux. The individual eServer 325 prices started at $2,919 by comparison with the above price for the JS20..
